Scan Preparation

Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to obtain a picture of the anatomy inside the area of the body we are looking at. It is used in soft tissue areas, for example the kidneys, liver and male or female genitalia. It is quick and painless; it does not use X-rays.

As ultrasound needs an air free boundary with the body in order to work, a water based gel is used for contact. This gel does not stain and is easily removed with paper after the examination.

The preparation varies for different examinations:

Liver and Renal Scan (Abdominal Scan): [Types of Scan]

Your Doctor has requested a scan of your liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, aorta and urinary bladder (+/- prostate if male). This is a trans-abdominal (external) examination. Please do not eat for 6 hours prior to the examination. If you need to take tablets, these can be taken with water (if you have any queries about this, please contact us). We also require that you drink 2 pints of fluid one hour prior to the examination and arrive with a full bladder. Fizzy drinks and milk based drinks are not recommended, water is preferable.

If you are diabetic and the scan appointment time given is not suitable, please inform us and this can be rearranged.

Upper Abdominal Scan:
[Types of Scan]

Your Doctor has requested a scan of your liver, gallbladder (GB) and kidneys. This is a trans-abdominal (external) examination. Please do not eat or drink for 6 hours prior to the examination. If you need to take tablets, these can be taken with a small amount of water (if you have any queries about this, please contact us).

If you are diabetic and the scan appointment time given is not suitable, please inform us and this can be rearranged.

Renal Tract Scan:
[Types of Scan]

Your Doctor has requested a scan of your kidneys and bladder (+/- prostate if male). This is a trans-abdominal (external) examination. We require that you drink 2 pints of fluid one hour prior to the examination and arrive with a full bladder. Fizzy drinks and milk based drinks are not recommended, water is preferable.

Thyroid Scan:
[Types of Scan]

Your Doctor has requested a scan of your thyroid gland. There is no preparation for this examination; please remove necklaces prior to the scan. This is a quick and painless procedure.

Testicular Scan:
[Types of Scan]

Your Doctor has requested a scan of your scrotum. There is no preparation for this scan; this is a quick and painless procedure.

Pelvic Trans-vaginal (internal) Scan:
[Types of Scan]

This scan examines the uterus and ovaries. A special probe the size of a tampon, covered in a sheath is inserted into the vagina. This should not be painful and you do not require a full bladder. This type of scan can give us a clearer image and is the preferred examination in certain situations. An internal scan will not be done if you are a virgin.

If you wish to decline this examination, your wishes will be respected and a scan across your tummy (trans-abdominal scan) will be performed. For this scan, we require that you drink 2 pints of fluid one hour prior to the examination.

Please note: A trans-vaginal ultrasound scan can still be done if you are having your menstrual period.

Pelvic Trans-abdominal (external) Scan:
[Types of Scan]

Your Doctor has requested a scan of your pelvis. We require that you drink 2 pints of fluid one hour prior to the examination and arrive with a full bladder. Fizzy drinks and milk based drinks are not recommended, water is preferable.
